Do you have a teenagers or a spouse who attempt to cook? Burn something on the stove? Have another reason you house doesn't smell the best? I may be able to help - bonus if you have some fruit that is close to expiration!!

This past Saturday my teenage son decided to take a stab at making some eggs. He is normally an excellent cook and often surprises me with his yummy creations. This egg mess was not one of them! I'm not sure what happened but I can tell you that my house smelled horribly all morning! I love my essential oils diffuser but this was a smell that nor my air purifier were even touching.

I gathered some fruits that were about to spoil and some herbs, a pot of water and my stove and set out to rectify the smelly house situation.

You can really use any fruit you have on hand or out or omit the fruit altogether if you don't have any. Throw in some herbs and spices to your liking and -whoala - you have the main ingredients to a simmer pot!

I like the smell of apples the best but had a lemon and orange and some ginger that needed to be used so threw those in. Cranberries smell amazing as well but I didn't have any on hand. My favorite is to pick some fresh pine or spruce needles and add them to the pot as well, I didn't have any on hand at the time. You can also use scopes and skins, this is a great way to use those pieces!

After the fruit find your favorite aromatic herbs. Aromatic herbs emit volatile oils that have medicinal properties but also smell amazing. I love to use rosemary, mint, cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg, but you can customize this to your liking. Some other ideas are lavender, rose, lilac, anise and bay leaves, but the options are endless.

Chop everything up!

Add some water to a medium size pot then bring to a boil. Once at a rolling boil, reduce to a simmer. Add more water as needed.

The great thing about simmer pots is that they keep giving. I used mine for several day and it still had an amazing scent. The best part: no chemicals!!

Apple Pie

the peel of 1 apple,

the peel of 1 orange

4 cinnamon sticks

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1 teaspoon cloves

slices of both apple and orange

Winter Fresh

1 tablespoon Rosemary (or one sprig fresh)

1 tablespoon Sage

4 Bay leafs

3-4 sprigs of pine/spruce

Enjoy a simmer pot any time!
